The Golden Opportunity: How Sticky and Aromatic Rice is Transforming the Lives of Tripura Farmers

Sticky and aromatic rice, one of the most exotic and nutritious rice varieties, has quickly become a trending commodity in India and globally. This distinctively colored rice variety is not only a culinary delight but also a symbol of hope and prosperity for the farmers of Tripura. Traditionally cultivated by tribal farmers in the region for over a thousand years, sticky and aromatic rice is now gaining widespread popularity, with more farmers turning to it as a profitable venture.

The Rise of Sticky and Aromatic Rice Farming in Tripura

In South Tripura’s Bagafa Block, more than 150 farmers have embraced sticky and aromatic rice farming. Their shift from conventional agriculture to cultivating this unique rice variety has brought significant financial rewards, with many of them doubling their profits. As demand continues to soar, these farmers have expanded their production to meet market needs.

However, challenges remain. The involvement of mediators and a lack of knowledge about the supply chain made it difficult for the farmers to effectively market their produce, limiting their potential earnings. To overcome these obstacles, support from various institutions became crucial.

Empowering Farmers through FPO Initiatives

Recognizing the potential of sticky and aromatic rice, the Government of India, with the assistance of SFAC (Small Farmers’ Agribusiness Consortium) and SDS Guwahati (Cluster-Based Business Organizations, CBBO), promoted the formation of the Ishan Uday Farmer Producer Company Ltd. (FPC) in the Bagafa Block. While the initial focus of the FPO was on promoting oilseed mustard, the need to develop the business skills and knowledge of the farmers emerged as a critical factor in establishing a competitive and sustainable farming business.

To address this gap, SDS implemented a systematic support program designed to build the capacity of the farmers. By converging efforts with various government departments, SDS played a pivotal role in providing the necessary training, guidance, and supervision. With the involvement of experts from KVK (Krishi Vigyan Kendra) South Tripura District and the SDS agriculture team, farmers received valuable insights into modern farming techniques and business strategies.

Transforming the Market: A Success Story

Before the formation of the FPO, sticky rice farmers sold their produce at Rs. 60 per kilogram. However, thanks to the efforts of the FPO, farmers are now able to sell their rice at Rs. 70 per kilogram to the FPC, which has in turn introduced their own rice brand, “Mohamuni.” With scientific and attractive packaging, the branded rice is now sold in Agartala markets at Rs. 100 per kilogram. This branding strategy has not only increased the value of the product but also enhanced its market appeal.

In addition to securing better prices for their produce, farmers also benefit from the FPC’s provision of low-cost fertilizers, pesticides, and other agricultural inputs, which help minimize production costs. These initiatives have encouraged more farmers to join the FPC and sell their goods through the cooperative structure.

The results speak for themselves. In just 40 days, the FPC sold 1,200 kilograms of sticky and aromatic rice, generating a turnover of Rs. 120,000. With a 20% profit margin, the FPC earned Rs. 24,000, demonstrating the potential of the cooperative model to create sustainable incomes for small farmers.

The success story of sticky and aromatic rice farming in Tripura is a testament to the transformative power of collective action and institutional support. By providing farmers with the right tools, knowledge, and market access, organizations like SDS and FPCs are helping small farmers unlock the full potential of their agricultural ventures. As the demand for this exotic rice continues to grow, the farmers of Tripura stand to benefit from increased profits and long-term sustainability, while consumers enjoy one of India’s most unique and nutritious rice varieties.

The journey of sticky and aromatic rice from tradition to trend shows how innovation in agriculture can empower rural communities and bring lasting prosperity to the region.
